How to lead at work — without losing at home

You carry the weight of the day — pressure, decisions, people, performance. But when you walk through the door at home, something’s not quite right. You’re drained, irritable and only half present. Deep down, you know your family deserves a better version of you.
This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about learning how to reset between roles so you stop constantly bringing work stress into your home life.
5 ways to reset between work and home
Use your transition time. Driving home, walking the dog, moving from office to kitchen — use that window to unwind rather than relive the day. Music, silence or deep breaths, whatever helps you decompress.
Change your state before you change roles. Movement resets the nervous system. A walk, stretch or cold shower — even two minutes is enough to shift from “operator” mode to “dad/husband/partner” mode.
Drop the phone. For your first thirty to sixty minutes at home, avoid scrolling and half-attention. Look people in the eye, ask about their day, and truly be present.
Name what you’re feeling. “I’m wound up from that meeting.” Naming the emotion reduces its grip and gives you the chance to respond thoughtfully rather than react.
Visualise how you want to show up. A quick check-in on the energy you want to bring — calm, playful, patient — chosen intentionally rather than left to chance.
Presence over perfection
You lead at work. But you lead at home, too. The people closest to you need you more than your emails do.
